NorthStar Capital Partners Inc. is an investment company that was created for the explicit purpose of participating in the turnaround sector of the economy.

Usually the turnaround area of investing is reserved for large institutional investors with teams of corporate viability specialists who move at lightning speed to stabilize a business in crisis.

In the past the only way to invest in a turnaround was to buy stock or debt in a distressed company and speculate that a turnaround would or should happen.

NorthStar will work to restore and revitalize companies, rebuilding the goodwill that was lost in a company’s capital structure due to mismanagement or excessive leverage.

In 1851, New York celebrated the completion of what was then the longest railroad in the world, The New York & Erie Railroad. In 1853, the railroad earned $4,318,762, towering over the American economic landscape.

By August 1854, The New York & Erie Railroad faced a liquidity crisis because it had financed long-term assets with short-term loans. All eyes turned to The New York & Erie's Board of Directors to take personal responsibility for the corporation's debts, as was the custom in that era. Panicked by the enormity of the debt payments coming due, they all declined.

"The Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt backstopped the debt of The New York & Erie to the sum of $400,000. For collateral, he took a mortgage on the entire rolling stock of the railroad, all 2,975 railroad cars and 180 locomotives. The rest is history.
